Colors+ Status Update
The challenges we’ve faced were unprecedented, but the nonprofit has proven its resilience and governance strength. We remain focused on our mission, programs, and community impact — stronger than before.
Organizational Update - Court Filings
Colors+ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in January 2018 and governed by a Board of Directors. Several months after the nonprofit was registered, its founders also registered Colors+ Counseling LLC, a separate, for-profit private business.
In 2023 and 2024, the Colors+ Youth Center Board of Directors discussed and reviewed governance and compliance issues, including reported confusion between the nonprofit and the private business. The Board undertook efforts to address and clarify these issues and, when those efforts did not fully resolve the concerns, concluded that it was appropriate to formalize the operational and organizational separation between the nonprofit and the founders’ private entity.
Following these developments, disagreements between the non-profit Colors+ and the for-profit business affected the nonprofit’s operations. Multiple attempts were made to resolve the disputes in good faith, including through professional mediation, but those efforts were unsuccessful and litigation followed. The Court subsequently granted a preliminary injunction in favor of the nonprofit, and the case remains pending.
Throughout this process, our programs have continued uninterrupted, and in 2025 we served 364 LGBTQIA+ youth and family members.
For those interested in reviewing the public filings:
Bottom Line:
The organization faced significant operational and governance challenges during this period, and has worked to respond in a measured and responsible manner. We have:
Acted responsibly – All actions were taken with board oversight and in consultation with legal counsel.
Protected our assets – Steps were taken to secure facilities, accounts, and digital systems, and to ensure continuity of organizational control.
Obtained a federal preliminary injunction – The Court granted preliminary injunctive relief in the nonprofit’s favor based on the record presented at that stage of the proceedings.
Continued operations – Programs and services remained ongoing, and staff and volunteers continued supporting our mission.
Pursuing appropriate remedies – The organization is pursuing legal claims and remedies through the pending litigation process.
We remain focused on our mission, programs, and community impact, and are taking steps to strengthen governance and ensure a sustainable operating model to serve LGBTQIA+ youth and families for years to come.
